Clocking up an impressive 692 episodes between 1979 and 1986, Prisoner (aka Prisoner Cell Block H) is one of the best-loved and best-remembered Australian soaps of all time. The series – which aired all over the world during the late ‘70s and ‘80s – focused on the inmates and prison officers at the fictional Wentworth Detention Centre, and featured such memorable characters as Bea Smith, Lizzie Birdsworth, and Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson.
Those who grew up watching Prisoner, or who discovered the show through re-runs or DVD releases will attest to how good it was and still is. The show featured a great balance of strong characters and compelling drama which kept audiences coming back for new instalments, and decades on it still has the power to captivate.
Having recently watched the show myself (for the first time) I can confirm how entertaining it is. I had a great deal of fun working my way through all 692 episodes, and spent lots of time getting lost in the storylines.
I also got a great deal of enjoyment out of the lighter elements of the series. While Prisoner delivered many hard-hitting stories, and dark content, it could be as camp as Christmas too, and in this day and age it has also become ripe for a meme or two… or three… or four!
