New to Netflix today is the Turkish drama, You Do You (aka Merve Kült). Directed by Cemal Alpan, You Do You stars Ahsen Eroglu, Mine Tugay and Ozan Dolunay, and follows the story of a young woman trying to find her place in life.

In the movie, Merve Kültür is a 24-year-old at a crossroads in life. She lives in an apartment with her mother, who desperately wants her daughter to get a job, but as Merve is quite comfortable living at home rent-free, every time she goes for an interview she deliberately messes it up.

One day, following another unsuccessful job interview, Merve returns home to her apartment to discover she will soon be evicted. Her father – who owns the building – has declared himself bankrupt, has put the building up for sale, and is forcing everyone to move out within two months.

With limited time available until eviction day, Merve realises that for once in her life she needs to land a job quickly. But after a brainstorming session with her friends fires up her creativity, Merve decides a faster way to make money would be to set up a dating App instead.

If the App becomes a success, Merve could make enough money to buy the building back from her father. However, in order to get the App off the ground, she is going to need investment from a financial backer.

After approaching businessman, Anil Gürman, Merve gets the investment she needs, and lands herself a job in fashion in the process. But as she soon discovers, working isn’t all bad, if you find something you enjoy doing.

However, Merve doesn’t just spend her time working, she also starts chatting with a mysterious man on her dating App. But little does Merve know, the mysterious man is her boss and investor, Anil, and he has a secret connected to her family.

Quirky, easy-to-watch, and breezy in places, You Do You is a perfectly fine streaming title for those looking to fill 100-minutes of their time. It’s nothing special, and as with many Netflix movies I doubt anyone will remember it in a couple of months’ time, but it’s certainly passable for those looking for something simple.

Ahsen Eroglu is strong as Merve, and appears to have fun playing the sassy lead character who likes to break the fourth wall. Her frequent asides to camera add something quite likeable to her performance, and she’s the main reason to stick with the film.

The picture is also put together quite well, with a decent supporting casting and some nice ideas. All the technical aspects (lighting, camera work, etc) all do what they need to do, and the whole thing is completely serviceable, even if the tone is a little inconsistent.

Other than the above, there’s not much else to say about You Do You. It’s fine, but not amazing.

Director Cemal Alpan delivers something which doesn’t have any major problems, it just isn’t that interesting. It has all the nuts and bolts in place, so it’s OK to watch, but don’t expect to become all that invested in it.

You Do You probably works best as a bit of background viewing. Stick it on, see what you think, just don’t build your whole night around it.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
