How was your weekend? Are you enjoying the June sunshine? And more importantly, did you go to the cinema this weekend to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
Well, if you didn’t, you had best get your tickets booked pronto! Not only is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse a must-see Marvel epic, with jaw-dropping animation, but everyone else is already off to see it – so you’re going to miss out if you don’t.
If you read my review on Friday, you will know I absolutely adored it. I awarded Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse a top score of five stars out of five, and called it “truly amazing.”
I said: “As with its predecessor (Into the Spider-Verse), Across the Spider-Verse is first and foremost a love letter to Spider-Man. This film takes ideas, characters, and references from all corners of the Spidey mythology, puts them together, and produces something truly satisfying.”

From the screening that I attended last week, I know I’m not the only one who was impressed with this film. There were a lot of bums on seats in my screening, with audiences fully engaged with the film, and this included a number of younger audience members who were dressed up as Spidey.
And unlike regular screenings I attend, which often get disrupted by rude audience members who are talking or messing around on their phones, there was not one single moment of inappropriate behaviour during the course of the film. Everyone laughed in unison, gasped when certain moments arose, and then cheered and clapped when the film ended.
While this might not be an MCU movie, the audience in my screening treated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse as if it was an Avengers-level event, akin to Infinity War or Endgame. There were a lot of smiles, plenty of post-screening chatter as I left the auditorium, and a general buzz and positive feeling about the whole experience.

But it’s not just my screening that was busy, screenings of this film have been busy all over the world. Across its opening weekend, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has taken a huge amount of money in its first three days.
According to Box Office Mojo the film has made $208,600,000, which equates to $120,500,000 from North American audiences, and $88,100,000 from international audiences. This is the second biggest domestic opening of the year (so far), and puts it on course for a very profitable run moving forward.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has opened only a week after The Little Mermaid, and just two weeks after Fast X, so to take over $208 million in just three days is a fantastic achievement. In the next two weeks it will face stiff competition from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and The Flash, but all signs are suggesting it will overcome these obstacles with ease.
Oh, and to put things into a bit of perspective, Across the Spider-Verse‘s predecessor, Into the Spider-Verse, took $384.3 million during its entire run. Across the Spider-Verse has taken over half of this amount during its opening weekend alone, which should tell you all you need to know about its future financial fortunes.

But it’s not just about the money, is it? Even bad films can take big amounts of dosh at the box office, so how well is it doing critically?
Well, in addition to the amount of cash the film has taken this weekend, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is also scoring very highly on review sites. The film’s IMDb score is an impressive 9.1/10, which is high for IMDb.
Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the Spidey sequel has a 95% rating on the Tomatometer, which is based on 254 reviews, and an audience score of 96%, which is based on over 5,000 verified ratings from general moviegoers. Once again, this is very high for Rotten Tomatoes, and very telling of what both critics and average cinema attendees think.

It’s fair to say, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is doing extremely well right now, and it is receiving credit where credit is due. The film is impressive stuff, and should tick all the right boxes for Spidey fans, as well as those who just love a good summer blockbuster.
Now the summer is here, and blockbuster season is in full-swing (my favourite movie season of them all), it’s fantastic to see a film like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse leading the way. Hopefully we are in for more movie treats this summer, but for now, let’s just cheer on Spidey and take a moment to appreciate what a great weekend it has been!
