In 1975, live-action Japanese show, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, hit television screens. The series followed the story of a team of super heroes, who are recruited by the Earth Guard League (EAGLE), to battle the Black Cross Army.

Between 1975 and 1977, 84 episodes of Gorenger were broadcast, much to the delight of young audiences. And due to the popularity of the show, when Gorenger finally ended, it was soon accompanied by additional series, which followed in its footsteps.

Gorenger and all these subsequent shows became collectively known as Super Sentai – a term used to describe Japanese super hero shows. These shows have remained in production every year since Gorenger first hit television screens, and have become very, very, successful in the process.

But how many Super Sentai series are there? For all the details, keep on reading.

What is the connection between the Power Rangers and the Super Sentai shows?

Image: ©Toei

What is the connection between Super Sentai and Power Rangers? Essentially one is created from the other.

In 1993, footage from Zyuranger (the 16th entry in the Super Sentai series), was used to form the basis of a new show designed specifically for Western audiences. Various scenes from Zyuranger (super hero shots, monster fights, etc), were spliced together with newly filmed footage of US actors, to create the children’s programme, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.

All scenes featuring Japanese actors were removed, storylines were re-written, and the new cast took centre stage. For all intents and purposes, this became an entirely new show, even though it reused plenty of material from its Japanese counterpart.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, this process of re-using and repackaging footage from Super Sentai shows was seen as a fruitful endeavour. As such, every Power Rangers series moving forward took existing footage from Super Sentai shows, in order to create new Power Ranger programming for Western audiences.
