Are You Afraid of the Dark? is a Canadian children’s horror series, which originally aired on Nickelodeon from 1990 until 1996. The anthology show, aimed at a young demographic, saw a group of kids – known as the Midnight Society – gather together around a camp fire to tell spooky stories.

During its initial run, the show proved popular with audiences, developed a loyal following, and ran for five seasons totalling 65 episodes. It was then later revived in 1999 for a further two seasons, adding another 26 episodes onto the total, before being revived again in 2019 with more seasons and yet more episodes.

First up is an absolute stone-cold classic from the show’s very first season. The episode is The Tale of Laughing in the Dark – a macabre story about a haunted fun house and a sinister clown.

In the story, teenager Josh visits a fun house, where he steals the nose from a clown statue that is part of the attraction. But he soon comes to regret this decision when the clown, Zeebo, begins to stalk him long after he has gone home.

The Tale of the Phone Police (1994)

Next up, in The Tale of the Phone Police, teenager Jake O’Brien makes a very bad decision when he chooses to make a prank phone call. This call attracts the attention of the Phone Police, who have the ability to erase someone’s existence.
