In 2008, writer/director Damien Leone created the horror character, Art the Clown. The ghoulish serial killer – known for his creepy demeanour and his bloody-thirsty tendencies – appeared in the horror short, The 9th Circle.
Although he was introduced in a supporting role, Art proved to be a big hit with horror fans, and quickly became the stand-out star of the film. As such, when Leone came to work on his next project, 2011’s horror short, Terrifier, Art was bumped up to a leading role.
Upon release, Terrifier created some buzz, and this soon caught the attention of producer Jesse Baget. At the time, Baget was working on a feature-length anthology movie called All Hallow’s Eve, and he was looking for a character like Art to take centre-stage.
After entering into discussions with Leone, Baget and his fellow producers made a deal for Art to feature in All Hallow’s Eve, by having both The 9th Circle and Terrifier incorporated into the new movie. The plan was for the two existing shorts to appear as the first and third segments of the anthology film, with a different story sandwiched in between.
With this plan in place, All Hallow’s Eve was completed and released in 2013, and while the movie received a mixed response from critics, one thing was very clear: fans loved Art the Clown. Art became the talking point of the movie, and much to the producers’ delight the film was successful.
Art’s popularity in All Hallow’s Eve convinced Leone that he was definitely onto something with the character, and that he should take him further. Moving forward, he removed Art from the anthology setting, and put him in his own series of films, where he could become the main focus instead of a bit player.
