Next week, Child’s Play arrives in cinemas, ushering in (potentially) a new run of movies featuring Chucky. The series about a killer doll is getting the reboot treatment, with a new cast, a reworked premise, and a new direction for the horror icon.

But what about the Chucky / Child’s Play series as a whole? What is the best order to watch the Chucky / Child’s Play movies?

Well, it’s actually pretty simple, but before I run through the list of movies, I need to explain why the films are sometimes referred to as Child’s Play and sometimes Chucky.

The original movie in the series is called Child’s Play and introduces the character of Charles Lee Ray, aka Chucky. The Child’s Play name remained with the series for three films, before it was rebranded to incorporate Chucky’s name in the title.

So, the Child’s Play name and the Chucky name are all part of the same series.

Clear?

Good.

Right, let’s talk about the movies and the order to watch them in.

The Mancini order

First up, is the Mancini order. This order includes seven movies, all written by Don Mancini, as well as a television series.

This order covers all of the entries in the original run of films, from the introduction of Chucky in Child’s Play, through to the arrival of Tiffany (Chucky’s girlfriend/wife) in Bride of Chucky. It then continues with the addition of a television series, which in itself is a direct continuation of the film series.

  • Child’s Play (1988)
  • Child’s Play 2 (1990)
  • Child’s Play 3 (1991)
  • Bride of Chucky (1998)
  • Seed of Chucky (2004)
  • Curse of Chucky (2013)
  • Cult of Chucky (2017)
  • Chucky (2022) – TV series

The first three entries in this series focus on a storyline between Chucky and Andy Barclay – a young boy who crosses paths with the killer doll. The next two entries (Bride/Seed) switch the focus onto Chucky’s girlfriend, Tiffany, as well as Chucky’s offspring.

The final two film entries (Curse/Cult) introduce a new protagonist in Nica – a young woman with a connection to Chucky. These films also dovetail back into the original storyline with Andy Barclay.

After seven movies, the television show picks up the story and includes appearances from Andy, Tiffany, and Nica.

OK, so that’s the main Chucky timeline, but it’s not the only one…

The reboot order

In 2019, despite the main Chucky series remaining popular with fans, the films were given a reboot, creating an alternate timeline. To date, there is only one entry in this series:

  • Child’s Play (2019)

This film ignores the seven previous entries, and the television show, and resets the franchise for a new generation. The movie is a remake of 1988’s Child’s Play, with a new interpretation of the Chucky character.

Production order

So, what do you do if you simply want to watch all of the Chucky content, regardless of timelines? Simple – you watch everything in production order!

If you want to watch all eight films under the Child’s Play/Chucky banner, plus the TV series, the production order is as follows:

  • Child’s Play (1988)
  • Child’s Play 2 (1990)
  • Child’s Play 3 (1991)
  • Bride of Chucky (1998)
  • Seed of Chucky (2004)
  • Curse of Chucky (2013)
  • Cult of Chucky (2017)
  • Child’s Play (2019)
  • Chucky (2021) – TV series

And that’s it.

If you want to check out any of the Child’s Play/Chucky movies, Universal has released The Chucky Complete 7-Movie Blu-ray collection which is available from Amazon in the UK. The same collection is available in the US too.

This collection includes the seven original movies (aka The Mancini Order), beginning with Child’s Play ’88 and running through to Cult of Chucky. The reboot is not included, but is available as a separate release.
