What is the best Jesse Stone movie?

Since making their debut in 2005, with the movie Stone Cold, the Jesse Stone movie series has become incredibly popular. The films – which star Tom Selleck – have built up a strong following, thanks to their mix of interesting characters and compelling storylines.

To date, there are nine movies in the Jesse Stone series (hopefully expanded to ten movies in the not-too distant future), but which is the best Jesse Stone movie? Does one stand out above the crowd, and if so, which one?

In this post, I am taking a look at the Jesse Stone movie series, by comparing the rankings of each film as they appear on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. Both websites are visited by millions of users, who rate and rank movies, so let’s see how the Jesse Stone movies are rated, to determine the ‘best’ Jesse Stone picture.

The Jesse Stone movies ranked according to IMDb

Below is a list of the Jesse Stone movies, ranked in order from best to least-best, according to IMDb. The Jesse Stone movies are ranked as follows:

Night Passage (2006) – 7.3/10
No Remorse (2010) – 7.3/10
Lost in Paradise (2015) – 7.3/10
Stone Cold (2005) – 7.2/10
Death in Paradise (2006) – 7.2/10
Sea Change (2007) – 7.2/10
Thin Ice (2009) – 7.2/10
Innocents Lost (2011) – 7.2/10
Benefit of the Doubt (2012) – 7.2/10

From the list above, it is clear that IMDb users place the movies on an almost equal footing, with each entry receiving either a rating of 7.2/10 or a 7.3/10. The movies ranked highest are: Night Passage (2006), No Remorse (2010), and Lost in Paradise (2015).

OK, so those are the IMDb ratings, but what about Rotten Tomatoes?

Below is a list of Jesse Stone movies, ranked in order of best to least-best, according to Rotten Tomatoes. The Jesse Stone movies are ranked as follows:

Stone Cold (2005) – 68%
Sea Change (2007) – 68%
Night Passage (2006) – 66%
Death in Paradise (2006) – 65%
Thin Ice (2009) – 59%
No Remorse (2010) – 56%
Innocents Lost (2011) – 55%
Benefit of the Doubt (2012) – 54%
Lost in Paradise (2015) – 45%

The above list is for the Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes – so, this is a set of ratings provided by audiences (not critics). As you can see, the scores are considerably different this time around.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the highest rated Jesse Stone movies are Stone Cold (2005) and Sea Change (2007). However, the lowest rated movie is Lost in Paradise (2015).

So, what does this tell us?

To be honest? Not a great deal. IMDb ranks the Jesse Stone movies on par with each other, while Rotten Tomatoes serves up a rather mixed bag of scores.

Both sites offer up the ‘best’ Jesse Stone movies, but if you compare the results of the two sites, there is not a definitive ‘best’ movie. And to make matters worse, IMDb rates Lost in Paradise as one of the best movies, while Rotten Tomatoes rates Lost in Paradise as the worst!

The end result? Erm… there is no ‘best’ Jesse Stone movie.

So, how do you work out what are the must-see Jesse Stone movies? Well, you either use one of the lists as a guide, or you simply watch the movies yourself and make your own judgement. What you’ll no doubt find, is that all the movies are great and you’ll enjoy the journey regardless of what is or isn’t the best picture.
