In 2005, Tyler Perry took his popular comedy character, Madea to the big screen, via the romantic comedy-drama, Diary of a Mad Black Woman. The film proved popular with audiences and led to a series of sequels, spin-offs, and associated follow-ups, with Madea appearing regularly throughout the series – mostly as the main character.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005)
First up is Diary of a Mad Black Woman, a romantic comedy-drama inspired by the play of the same name. The movie tells the story of Helen Simmons-McCarter – a woman who is thrown out of her house by her husband (on their 18th wedding anniversary no less), and moves in with her grandmother, Madea. Madea’s Family Reunion (2006)
Up next is the 2006 comedy-drama, Madea’s Family Reunion. This film focuses on a forthcoming family reunion, which Madea is preparing for, while dealing with all the drama that surrounds it. (109 mins)
Meet the Browns (2008)
In this third movie, Madea only appears in a cameo role. The movie – Meet the Browns – instead focuses on Brenda Brown-Davis, a struggling single mother from Chicago, who takes her children to Georgia to attend her long-lost father’s funeral. (108 mins)

Madea Goes to Jail (2009)
Back to a full Madea story now with the 2009 comedy-drama, Madea Goes to Jail, and in this film Madea is sent to prison after she is unable to control her anger. Here she befriends a young prostitute. (103 mins)
I Can Do Bad All by Myself (2009)
In I Can Do Bad All by Myself, an alcoholic lounge singer is persuaded to take custody of her niece and nephews by Madea. (113 mins)
Madea’s Big Happy Family (2011)
Up next is Madea’s Big Happy Family, a comedy-drama in which Madea discovers her niece is dying from cancer. Shocked by the news, she gathers together her niece’s children and their family to help them deal with the situation. (106 mins)

A change of appearance for this next entry, as the Madea movie series become a bit more cartoonish with the animated comedy, Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Tough Love. In this animated film, Madea is sentenced to community service at a youth centre. (64 mins)

Boo! A Madea Halloween (2016)
In Boo! A Madea Halloween, Madea is tasked with watching over her young relation, Tiffany as she handles various horrors. (103 mins)
