In 1978, low budget movie Attack of the Killer spoofed its way into cinemas. The horror comedy, about sentient killer tomatoes was a moderate box office hit and led to a series of movies, as well as a cult animated show (which ran for two seasons).

But how many Killer Tomatoes movies are there and what is the viewing order? Well, if you would like to start scrolling, I have the answers.

Are all of the Killer Tomatoes movies part of the same series?

All four Killer Tomatoes films are part of the same series, with events told in chronological order. However, it is important to note that Killer Tomatoes Eat France was originally intended to be the third entry in the series, but it was released as the fourth film.

Why did I need to note this? Because there is a brief reference in the second movie about one of the characters going to France in the next film, but this didn’t quite play out as planned.

What is the best Killer Tomatoes film?

Return of the Killer Tomatoes is generally considered to be the strongest film in the collection, and has gained a cult status. In my personal opinion, it is the one to focus your attention on, as it is the funniest.

On a side note, Return of the Killer Tomatoes also provided the inspiration for the animated show. Without Return there would be no cartoon.

The films regarded as the weakest entries are Killer Tomatoes Strike Back and Killer Tomatoes Eat France.

According to IMDb the Killer Tomatoes films are ranked as follows:

  • Return of the Killer (1988) – 5.2/10
  • Attack Killer Tomatoes (1978) – 4.6/10
  • Killer Tomatoes Eat France (1991) – 3.7/10
  • Killer Tomatoes Strike Back (1990) – 3.6/10

I would say this is a fair assessment, BUT I would have awarded Return of the Killer Tomatoes a higher rating. It is a little rough around the edges, there’s no denying that, but it is a gem of a B-movie and it deserves its status as a cult movie.
