The John Wick movies
John Wick (2014)
As noted above, the first movie in the action series was 2014’s John Wick. The film followed the story of the titular Wick, who begins the movie as a retired assassin living in New York.
However, after a group of Russian gangsters steal Wick’s car and kill his puppy (which was given to Wick by his late wife, Helen), John Wick sets out on a quest for revenge. What follows is a brutal fight to the finish, as John Wick battles his way through various adversaries.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
When John Wick made its debut in 2014, the film was a surprise hit. Critics were impressed with the action, audiences felt the same, and the movie did decent business at the box-office. As a result, a sequel was soon put into production, arriving in 2017 under the title, John Wick: Chapter 2.
In this second instalment, John Wick is forced to honour a debt from his past. This involves targeting someone he has no interest in killing.
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019)
Upon release, John Wick: Chapter 2 was both a critical and commercial hit, which guaranteed a sequel would follow. That sequel arrived in 2019 under the title John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
In this entry, John Wick is on the run from a legion of hitmen, after a bounty is placed on his head. Bounty hunters and assassins are on his trail, leading to another fight for survival.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
As with its predecessors, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum was another hit with critics and audiences. It was also a huge box-office success, taking more money than the first two entries, and this meant a fourth instalment was a forgone conclusion.
Arriving in 2023 under the title John Wick: Chapter 4, this fourth entry furthered the story. In the movie, John Wick sets out to get revenge against the High Table (a council of crime bosses), as well as those who left him for dead.
Ballerina (2025)
After four entries in the John Wick movie series, it was time for a slight change in direction. Moving away from the main series, Lionsgate – the studio behind the franchise – gave the green light for a spin-off film.
This spin-off movie would be Ballerina. Set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina focused its story on Rooney – a ballerina-assassin, who seeks revenge against the people who murdered her family.
