Originally published as a series of seven fantasy novels by author, J. K. Rowling, the Harry Potter books were first adapted for the big screen in 2001. The initial entry was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone which introduced cinemagoers to Harry, his best friends Ron and Hermione, and the school they attend – Hogwarts, a school for witchcraft and wizardry.

That opening entry was a huge hit with audiences and was quickly followed in 2002 with the first sequel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Once again, the movie was a hit and the third entry arrived in 2004.

Further films were produced, each adapting the next book in the series as one feature-length story. That was until Warner Bros. Pictures reached the final book in the series.

Due the length of the book, and the desire to create an epic (and more profitable) finale to the movie series, the studio opted to split the seventh novel into two movies. So, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows became Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (released in 2010) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (released in 2011).

The viewing order for the Harry Potter films is as follows:

  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)*
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010)
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011)

*Please note, in the US Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was re-titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

By watching the movies in this order, you will see Harry attend Hogwarts for the first time, then move his way through school, year by year. You will also see him battle his arch enemy, Voldemort He Who Must Not Be Named.

OK, so that’s the core Harry Potter films covered, now on to the spin-off!

Although Harry’s story concluded on the big screen with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, that wasn’t the end for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Keen to keep the Harry Potter story alive, Warner Bros. Pictures moved forward on a series of spin-off movies that would act as prequels.

The first movie prequel was based on J. K. Rowling’s book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Set years before the Harry Potter films, the film focused on a character called Newt Scamander, as played by Eddie Redmayne.

Released in 2016, the movie was a critical and commercial hit and led to a sequel. The follow-up continued Scamander’s story, further developing the Wizarding World pre-Harry Potter.

The movies in the Fantastic Beasts collection (so far) include:

  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
  • Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)

Additional entries are planned for this series.
