It’s official – Venom 2 has found its director.

Actor-turned-director, Andy Serkis has signed up to helm the sequel – a follow-up to 2018’s Venom. The movie will see Tom Hardy reprise the role of Eddie Brock/Venom, for the Sony Pictures production.

Serkis announced the news via social media. In a post, he said: “It’s actually happening. I can feel it, the Symbiote has found a host in me, and I’m ready for the ride… cant’ wait! Are you ready @tomhardy?”

No details on the story just yet, but an end credit scene in Venom suggests the movie will introduce the fan-favourite villain, Cletus Kasady/Carnage. Woody Harrelson played the role of Kasady in Venom, and it is believed he will return for the sequel.

Now while I am interested to see where Serkis takes this sequel, and I’m pleased Sony is entrusting a director so well-versed in motion capture/CGI (an advantage with a CGI heavy character like Venom), I’m not excited about this project at all. I really didn’t like the first movie and Harrelson’s brief cameo was dire.

Can this film turn things around?

I hope so.

You can read my thoughts about Venom in my post: ‘I’ve finally seen Venom… ugh‘. I believe I’m harsh, but fair.

Feel free to read the post and tell me your thoughts. I am aware that many people enjoyed the film – it certainly made a lot of money – so I’m always interested to read/hear different opinions ahead of the sequel.

Venom 2 is currently scheduled for release in late 2020. It will be Sony’s third live-action Spider-Man spin-off movie (which doesn’t star Spidey), following Venom and next summer’s Morbius.
