In 1984, independently produced splatter comedy, The Toxic Avenger hit cinema screens. Produced by Troma Entertainment (specialists in low-budget films), the movie focused on a janitor who falls into a drum of toxic waste and is transformed into a hideously deformed person of super human size and strength… who also happens to become a superhero.

Upon release, The Toxic Avenger became a cult favourite, which in turn led to a series of movies. The film also inspired a reboot.

The Toxic Avenger films in order

The Toxic Avenger (1984)

The first instalment in The Toxic Avenger movie series made its debut in 1984. The film focused on Melvin Ferd Junko III, a 98-pound janitor who is constantly ridiculed by customers at the health club he works at.

In the film, Melvin falls into a drum of toxic waste, which transforms and mutates his body. This in turn grants him superhuman size and strength, which he later puts to use to clean up the town of Tromaville.

The Toxic Avenger – Part II (1989)

Following the release of The Toxic Avenger, a sequel was put into production and released in 1989. In this film, ‘Toxie’ the Toxic Avenger travels to Tokyo to search for his estranged father, leaving Tromaville to the mercy of an evil corporation.

The Toxic Avenger – Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989)

Released a few months after Part II, The Toxic Avenger – Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie continued Toxie’s battle with crime! In this entry, Toxie believes he has rid Tromaville of evil, only to discover this isn’t the case at all.

Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV (2000)

Following the release of Part III, The Toxic Avenger movie series went on hiatus for over a decade until a fourth entry debuted in 2000. In this film, Toxie must do battle with his evil doppelgänger, The Noxious Offender.

The Toxic Avenger (2023/2025)

After the release of Part IV, the movie series went on hiatus once again, before being revived in the form of a reboot. The film followed a similar path as the original, but this time focused on janitor Winston Gooze.

The movie debuted at Fantastic Fest in 2023, but was not released to the general public until 2025.
