Over the past couple of weeks (if you’ve been to the cinema) you’ve probably viewed a trailer for The Current War. You may have also noticed a few posters for the movie dotted around your city/town – maybe splashed across the side of a bus.

The trailer and the posters for the film feature the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland – two of the stars of this year’s epic Marvel movie, Avengers: Endgame. The advertising, the big star names, and a key release date (peak summer blockbuster time), suggest this could be a movie of note – but is it?

More importantly, what the heck is The Current War and why is it hitting cinemas now?!

The Current War is a 2017 historical drama, that tells the story of Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse – two men responsible for introducing competing electric transmission systems during the late 1800s. The movie is directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and yes, you read that correctly it was released in 2017!

The Current War made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017, with a theatrical release set for November of the same year. However, November came and the movie failed to make an appearance and this was due to its connection to The Weinstein Company.

The Weinstein Company was the distributor of The Current War, but due to allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding movie producer, Harvey Weinstein, the film was held back from release. The Weinstein Company then went into bankruptcy in early 2018 and the film was shelved.

It remained shelved until recently, when Lantern Entertainment picked up distribution rights and decided to get it back into cinemas. However, Lantern had one rather large problem on its hands – the early reviews (from its premiere two years ago) were not particularly favourable.

So, what do you do when you acquire a movie that few people have heard of, has less than favourable reviews, and should have been released two years ago? You look to the movie’s talent, and their connection to the biggest movie of the year, and then you drop it into cinemas as soon as you can.

So, sandwiched between the likes of Aladdin, The Lion King, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Toy Story 4 and Men in Black: International, is a movie which couldn’t be more out of place if it tried. However, there’s an Avengers connection (of sorts) so people might go and see it.

Maybe.

If you want to see The Current War, and you live in the UK, you can catch it from July 26th. If you live in the US, you’ve got to wait until October.

And now you know.
