In 1997, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery swung its way into cinemas. The action comedy, about a sex-crazed British spy, was conceived as a spoof of the James Bond movie series, with comedian Mike Myers taking on the role of Powers.

In the film, Powers is a secret agent working for the British government in the 1960s. However, during the course of the movie he gets cryogenically frozen, is revived in the 1990s, and hilarity ensues.

Upon release, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was a hit with critics and audiences alike. As such, it developed a loyal following and spawned a movie series.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)

As noted above, the first entry in the Austin Powers movie series was 1997’s Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. In this movie, in between his rampant sex life during the 1960s, Austin battles his arch nemesis Dr. Evil.

However, when Dr. Evil freezes himself using cryogenics, Austin follows suit. They then both thaw out in 1997, where they continue their conflict in a time period neither quite understands.

Produced on a budget of $18 million, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery went on to take over $67 million at the worldwide box-office. This not only made the film a success, it guaranteed a sequel would follow.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

Two years after the release of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, a second entry made its debut. Featuring a more risqué title in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, this follow-up would be bigger, bolder, and more outrageous than its predecessor, with a broader sense of humour too.

Continuing the story from the first film, Dr. Evil uses a time machine to travel back to 1969 in order to steal Austin’s ‘sexual mojo’. This in turn causes Austin to go back in time too, to thwart Dr. Evil’s latest scheme and hopefully get his sex drive back!

Produced on a budget of $33 million, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me was a huge hit taking $312 million. It also tickled the funny bone of audiences the world over, guaranteeing yet another sequel would follow.

Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)

With the first two films proving extremely popular with audiences, a third film was put into production. The movie – Austin Powers in Goldmember – arrived in cinemas in 2002, and once again focused on Austin, Dr. Evil, and a spot of time hopping.

In this film, Dr. Evil travels to 1975 to partner with Dutch villain, Johann van der Smut, aka Goldmember. Austin once again follows close behind, heading to the ‘70s where he teams up with new partner, Foxxy Cleopatra.

Austin Powers in Goldmember was yet another box-office success, taking almost $297 million.
