Day 31 of 60 Days of Halloween and this morning I decided to take a look through Netflix in order to catch up on the many, many horror films I have on my ‘to watch’ list. After a bit of debating, I opted to watch the Australian zombie/survivalist movie, Cargo.

And what a great choice that was!

Directed by Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke, Cargo is set in a world ravaged by a virus. The movie stars Martin Freeman as a father who is trying his best to keep his baby daughter safe, while the whole world around him is falling apart.

The zombie genre is getting a little tired and we’ve reached the point where everything has been done before (countless times before in fact), but that doesn’t stop Cargo from being a great movie. Low in budget, but high in characterisation, the film touches on various themes which are very relevant today and presents a portrait of love, loss and hope.

The zombie theme is subtly played and there are no big scares, so it’s even suitable for those who are not big on horror. Big thumbs up for this one and highly recommended.

Should you want to check out Cargo for yourself, the movie is currently available to stream on Netflix.

60 Days of Halloween continues tomorrow…
