Day 14 of 60 Days of Halloween continued today with a movie double-bill which required a rather long trip to the cinema. Today I watched THREE movies at the flicks, two of which slotted neatly into my Halloween-a-thon (the other movie was non-Halloween themed and will be discussed in a follow-up post).

The two Halloween-themed movies today were The House With A Clock In It’s Walls (2018) and The Predator (2018). One of these movies I really liked, the other not so much.

The House With A Clock In It’s Walls

The first movie of the day, which I watched at 9:15am (yes, I did go to the cinema that early) was The House With A Clock In It’s Walls. The movie – directed by Eli Roth – stars Jack Black and Cate Blanchett and is based on the book of the same name by John Bellairs.

I really liked this movie as not only did it balance the right amount of laughs with scares, it also felt like a great family-friendly Halloween film, similar in tone to Goosebumps (2015), Casper (1995), The Addams Family (1991) etc. So there were creepy characters, but there was also a lot of fun to be had.

Eli Roth, known for his pretty gruesome horror movies such as The Green Inferno (2013) had to reduce the gore factor for this movie, but his mark was still stamped all over the picture. The result was a surprisingly effective film and one I’d recommend for the teen crowd looking for a bit of fun this Halloween.

The House With A Clock In It’s Walls previewed in the UK today, but goes on general release at the end of next week.

The Predator

The second movie I watched today was The Predator, the latest entry in the long-running action/sci-fi/horror series. The movie – which was set on Halloween – saw a couple of Predators land on Earth (again) and go head-to-head with a shadowy government agency, as well as a rag-tag bunch of service men.

The reviews for The Predator have been so-so and I have to agree with the general consensus. While I didn’t hate The Predator, I didn’t particularly like it either and by the end of the movie I was pretty bored.

I’ll go into a few more details in a follow-up post, but in short I thought it was watchable but pretty ‘meh’ overall.

The Predator is currently on general release.

60 Days of Halloween continues tomorrow…
