’90s animated show Rugrats is being revived.

The series – which focused on a group of babies and their often chaotic adventures – will return in the shape of a new TV series AND a new movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series will comprise 26 episodes and will air on Nickelodeon, while the new movie will be a mix of live-action and CGI.

The series is already in production so will be hitting screens in the not-too distant future, with original creators Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain on board as executive producers. An air date has yet to be announced.

The movie will enter production shortly, with David Goodman providing the script. A release date has been set for November 13th 2020.

Sarah Levy, Chief Operating Officer at Viacom Media Networks and interim President at Nickelodeon, said:

Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures.”

She added: “What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: Kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.”

Making its debut in August 1991, Rugrats has been a huge success story for Nickelodeon, with the original run clocking up nine seasons and a total of 172 episodes. The series was accompanied by a range of merchandise and was followed by three movies and two spin-off shows, All Grown Up! and Rugrats Pre-School Daze.
