Earlier this morning I published my (slightly) spoilery and non-spoilery thoughts on Solo: A Star Wars Story. In short: While the movie is in no way ‘film of the year’, it is a good adventure story with a lot to like – especially if you’re a long-term Star Wars fan.
Now while Solo: A Star Wars Story isn’t necessarily essential viewing in the grand scheme of things it does offer up some little insights as to what is (hopefully) to come – and this excites me.
So, Darth Maul is very much alive (a few more details about that here) and he’s become a background player. This offers up potential storylines for future Solo sequels (if we get more Solo movies), but this also offers up storylines for one other key character – Obi-Wan Kenobi.
There has been A LOT of talk recently about the possibility of an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. So much talk in fact that it seems like a foregone conclusion.
And who would make a good villain for an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie? Hmm… how about Darth Maul?
Maul has reason to dislike Obi-Wan – after all, Kenobi did slice the Sith Lord in two during the events of The Phantom Menace. That sort of thing not only leaves a sting, it also creates a motive for revenge!
While Maul’s appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story might have been brief, the character’s inclusion poses various questions and allows for a greater story to take place further down the line.
The prequel connections
Maul isn’t the only connection to the Star Wars prequels – Aurra Sing also gets a name check. The former bounty hunter is now deceased, but the fact that she was even mentioned in the movie, along with Maul’s appearance, suggests that Lucasfilm is interested in establishing greater links between the prequels and the other movies within the Star Wars Saga.
OK, so the prequels are not everyone’s cup of tea, but there were some good characters in those three movies, with a lot of potential. It’s entirely possible that Lucasfilm is reminding audiences about the prequels in order to create foundations for further standalone movies connected to this era of the Saga.
I for one would love to see a Kit Fisto movie or even a Ki-Adi-Mundi film. And let’s not rule out more from the likes of Anakin Skywalker!
The standalone movies can be used to tweak and improve upon the prequels, so the inclusion of mentions and nods to events & characters in the prequel trilogy gives great scope for the future.
Breaking away from the core Saga
Solo: A Star Wars Story has had a difficult job – creating an understanding for the audience that makes it clear that standalone movies don’t have to be directly connected to the ongoing plot of the main Saga. Thankfully, the movie proved this with new and interesting characters who can stand as equals to established players.
And now that Solo: A Star Wars Story has demonstrated these side stories can be worth a watch, I feel a lot more confident in seeing more of these stories in the future. Perhaps a bounty hunter movie that isn’t just about Boba Fett? Maybe an Enfys Nest film which details her next move?
What about a film that has no existing Saga characters at all – a completely new tale feature all-new characters?!
Whatever happens next, I’m excited for the future of Star Wars.
