Welcome to 90 from the ‘90s; the movie-related post in which I watch, discuss and debate a film from the 1990s – a film that I’ve NEVER SEEN. Posting on a semi-regular basis, I aim to work my way through 90 movies that I’ve previously missed/avoided, recording my thoughts along the way.
I’m going to watch good films, bad films, forgotten classics, Oscar winners and everything in between. Some of these films you’ll be surprised I’ve never seen, others you’ll completely understand why I’ve avoided them for 20+ years.
The rules are as follows:
- The film must be from the 1990s (1990-1999)
- The film must be a movie I’ve not watched before
Today’s unseen ‘90s movie is…
Of Mice and Men (1992)
Not only have I never watched Of Mice and Men, I also know very little about it, other than the fact that it stars John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. I also believe that John Malkovich’s character has learning difficulties and… I think someone dies, but I don’t know who.
So, why do I know nothing about Of Mice and Men?
It’s simple really: At my high school you either studied Of Mice and Men at GCSE English or you studied The Color Purple. I was in the group that studied The Color Purple.
Due to the school-text connection, at no point during the last 26 years have I ever felt the need to watch Of Mice and Men. Today I’m changing that.

5mins – So, five minutes in and John Malkovich and Gary Sinise appear to be on the run for some reason. Whatever that reason is, I bet they didn’t do it. I bet the one-armed man did it!
15mins – I’m fifteen minutes in and two things have become apparent: This film is pretty serious stuff and both John Malkovich and Gary Sinise are very good in their roles.
22mins 30secs – There’s a dog on screen! Yay!
22mins 39secs – Two dogs!
22mins 45secs – More than two dogs!
22mins 50secs – Every movie should have dogs in it. Dogs make movies so much better. I’m not sure if these dogs are vital to the story, but I feel they should be.
28mins – This movie feels like something you’d watch for GCSE English. I don’t mean that in a bad way, it’s just clearly a good movie. You tend to watch good movies at school, like Schindler’s List or Romeo & Juliet. Although there was this one time at school where we watched Waterworld – so maybe not every movie is a good movie.
34mins – There’s talk about shooting a dog. If the dog dies I will not be happy.
36mins 50secs – John Malkovich has a puppy! 🙂 BEST MOVIE EVER!
45mins – John Malkovich is playing with the puppy. 🙂
45mins 40secs – There’s talk about shooting a dog again. Seriously, what’s that all about? Don’t show me scenes of John Malkovich playing with a puppy and then talk about shooting a dog in the next scene!
50mins – The dog has just been shot. I take back everything about this being the best movie ever. And I have no idea why high school teachers would subject kids to this.
51mins – This movie had better have a very uplifting ending.
1hr 3mins – OK, so now there’s talk about living on a farm and everything seems much happier. I’m sure nothing can go wrong now.
1hr 4mins – John Malkovich is being beaten up. Jeez… when will this madness end?
1hr 5mins – And now John Malkovich has just Hulked-out and crushed someone’s hand. This film is like an emotional rollercoaster. It’s effectively a very intense episode of Little House on the Prairie.
1hr 21mins – Oh jeez… John Malkovich has just accidentally killed his puppy. I don’t think I can watch any more of this movie.
1hr 29mins – It’s going from bad to worse…. John Malkovich has just killed someone. I seriously can’t cope.
1hr 32mins – And now Gary Sinise has just discovered the body. I don’t think this film is going to have an uplifting ending.
1hr 43mins – John Malkovich and Gary Sinise are on the run. Surely they’re going to get away and live out their lives on the farm they’ve always dreamed about, right?
1hr 44mins 50secs – 😨
1hr 45mins – Gary Sinise has just shot John Malkovich.
1hr 45mins 10secs – ……………
1hr 46mins – There are no words.
So… er… I don’t really know what to say.
Of Mice and Men is a very, very good movie. However it’s also a movie which is brutal.
Malkovich and Sinise are superb and I’m glad that I’ve now finally watched Of Mice and Men, but I can’t say I’m likely to watch it again in a hurry. I can totally see why this is required text for some GCSE students… but damn do I feel blue now.
Probably watching this movie first thing on a Sunday morning was not the best idea. I think I need to put something light-hearted on now to take the pain away.
*Puts Trolls on*
Ah… much better.
23 down; 67 to go.
